great story i read about jamie mclennan's days with the islanders:
In the first game things are going rather smoothly, with McLennan's team leading. But, when they took to the ice after the second period McLennan headed towards his net only to find the mascot for the Baby Leafs standing in his crease.
"I skate up and ask him to move because I wanted to scrape my crease. He's giving me the big taunt and fans are into it. I didn't know what to do. I asked him to move and he wouldn't. Anyway I gave him a little shove and he finally moved away," said McLennan.
McLennan's team won the game 5-2 and he felt he had played pretty well. When he met with Smith after the game he was probably expecting some positive reinforcement. Instead he got a tongue lashing.
"He was furious that I didn't attack the mascot," said McLennan.
The coach of the team was Butch Goring, another Islander favourite. McLennan wasn't sure what to think of this mascot ordeal and was hoping that Goring would decide to play the team's other goalie so he wouldn't have to deal with the issue.
"But, sure enough on Wednesday, a day before the game he tells me I am playing," said McLennan.
"I thought about the mascot all night," he laughed.
Sure enough the mascot was in his crease again, just like he was two nights earlier.
"I full bored on him and cross-checked him right into the net," said McLennan.
The team lost that night 4-1.
'We lose the game and afterward Billy Smith is smiling away. He was like a proud father. I was terrible in the net but I had attacked the mascot so he was thrilled." posted by Mike at 12:13 PM
